At Smoke Rise Field Club, safety is our utmost priority, and we strive to provide a secure and enjoyable shooting environment for all members and guests. We take collective responsibility for ensuring the safety of everyone on our shooting courses. To maintain the highest safety standards, we have established comprehensive safety rules that must be followed by all participants and observers.

Eye and Ear Protection

  • Eye and ear protection are mandatory for all participants and observers on the shooting courses.
  • Ensure proper fit of ear protection to minimize any gaps that could compromise effectiveness.

Shotgun Rules

  • Load shotguns only after entering the shooting station and pointing the gun downrange.
  • Load a maximum of two shells in the gun at a time. Ensure the gun is unloaded before leaving the shooting position.
  • Keep breeches and actions open when the shooter is out of the shooting station.
  • Break actions may be closed in a gun rack, while semi-automatic bolts must be open.
  • Using shot shell pellet size larger than number 7 ½ is prohibited.
  • Members and guests must not access traps or related equipment; these are handled exclusively by the staff.

Rifle Range Protocol

  • The Rifle Range is for Smoke Rise Members and Accompanied Guests, prioritizing hunting and target rifles.
  • Rifle Range sessions require scheduling with the Club Manager/Range Safety Officer.
  • Each session is limited to a maximum of 10 shots.
  • Fully automatic firing modes and specific rifles require approval from the Club Manager.
  • Unload rifles before any activity downrange.
  • Only one active rifle shooter at a time, using the designated firing line.
  • Target stands accommodate 18″ x 14″ paper targets exclusively.
  • Use typical hunting or target ammunition; no non-typical ammo allowed.

Pistol Range Etiquette

  • The Pistol Range is reserved for Smoke Rise Members and their Accompanied Guests.
  • The first shooter on the range becomes the Range Master, controlling when shooting starts and stops.
  • Unload all weapons before any activity downrange, with actions open.
  • In case of a jam, call a cease fire and safely address the issue, keeping the muzzle downrange.
  • Up to two shooters are allowed at the Pistol Range, adhering to the designated firing line.
  • Only paper or reactive metal targets are permitted, with target ammo for metal targets and high-performance ammo for paper.
  • .22 caliber rim fire rifles are allowed, following the same rules.
  • Magnum pistols or short-range rifles require notification to the Club Manager and Range Master before use.

Cart Safety

  • No golf carts on the Ridge course.
  • Operators must be 18 years or older with a valid driver’s license, and receive approval from the Club Manager.
  • Polaris UTVs operate in low-range, AWD mode at all times.
  • Engage parking brake and wheel chocks when stopping, especially on hills.
  • Uphill starts require gradual gas application to engage the clutch before releasing the parking brake.
  • Maintain distance from downhill road edges and descend slowly.
  • Bypassing groups on the Ridge course requires shooting make up stations on the Valley course.
  • Avoid making two trips around the Ridge course.
